There are lots of different ways to prepare chocolate mendiants. Here’s a very easy version made with Zen Grand Granola which is perfect for the holidays!
What is a Mendiant?
The name of this chocolate disk filled with nuts and dried fruits can be confusing if you speak French, because “mendiant” means “beggar”! Originally, mendiant chocolates were made with hazelnuts, almonds, raisins and dried figs, but nowadays there are all sorts of variations, including pistachios, walnuts, pine nuts, candied orange peel, and more…
Making the mendiants is very easy – you just need to melt the chocolate and pour it onto parchment paper, or another nonstick surface, forming it into disks and adding the other ingredients before the chocolate cools and hardens.
Our Recipe for Mendiants with Zen granola
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Portions: A dozen Medallions
- Melt the chocolate in a double boiler.
- Pour small drops of melted chocolate onto a parchment covered baking sheet. Using the back of a spoon spread the chocolate lightly to form little round circles of about 4 to 5 cm wide.
- Sprinkle with Zen Grand Granola.
- Leave to set in a cool place (at least 1 hour).
- Once hardened, lift the Chocolate Medallions and serve!
